What does Butterwood actually do?

Butterwood is a design and strategy studio for commercial environments, hospitality venues, workplaces, retail spaces, and brand experiences. We bring together architectural design and brand strategy as a single practice, because how a space looks, how it functions, and what it means are the same question answered three ways. Think of us as the team you call when the space needs to do more than just look good, when it needs to make people feel something.

What makes your approach to design different?

We start with a philosophy most commercial design studios don't: that commercial spaces deserve the same care as a home. Not home as an aesthetic, not cushions and warm lighting. Home as a psychological state: the feeling of belonging, of being oriented, of wanting to stay. We design from the inside out, beginning with how people actually behave in a space before we consider a single material or finish. The result is environments that people return to, recommend, and feel loyal toward, not because they're impressive, but because they feel right.

How does brand strategy connect to the design of a space?

Every brand already has a spatial language, most just haven't articulated it yet. The values, stories, and emotional territories that make a brand distinctive don't stop at the screen or the page. They belong in the physical space too. We work with clients to uncover what their space should say before anyone picks up a pencil. That strategic clarity means the architecture, materials, flow, and atmosphere all work in service of the same story. The result isn't a branded interior, it's an environment that is the brand, experienced in three dimensions.

What kinds of projects do you work on?

We work across three areas — often in combination:
Place Strategy — For property owners, developers, and operators rethinking how their spaces work. We audit what a space is doing, what it could be doing, and build a roadmap to close the gap.
Commercial Design — For hospitality venues, workplaces, showrooms, and retail environments that need architectural design grounded in brand strategy. From concept through to construction documentation.
Brand Environment Design — For agencies and brand owners who need a physical space to feel like the brand, not just display it. Pop-ups, flagships, activations, and permanent environments.
Projects range from a single workshop helping a client understand their spatial strategy, through to full design and documentation of built environments.

Who will I be working with?

Butterwood is led by two principals: Emma Butterworth (architecture & design) and Warwick Heathwood (strategy & experience). Between them, they bring over 30 years of practice across residential architecture, brand strategy, and commercial environments, with experience spanning Brisbane, Sydney, San Francisco, and New York.
You'll work directly with Emma and Warwick. Not a project manager. Not an account team. The people who shape the thinking are the people in the room.
Emma's question: How will people actually live in this space?
Warwick's question: What should someone feel when they walk through the door?Their questions are different. The answer is the same design.
